About ‘the Spec’
In terms of sheer size, scale and scope, the Schools Spectacular is unequalled in the world. It provides an opportunity for more than 3000 New South Wales public school students of different ages, cultures, skills and socio-economic backgrounds from country, metropolitan and isolated regions of the state to showcase their talents.
A representative spectrum of students from more than 250 public schools rehearse for months in preparation for four shows over two days and nights. Mentoring and pairing of experienced, senior entertainers with junior stars of the future provides students with unique and life-changing opportunities.
All sectors of the public school community participate, including rural and metropolitan, large and small schools, Indigenous students, male and female dancers, students with a disability, choirs, rock bands, orchestras, multicultural ensembles, hip hop dancers and ballerinas. Combined, they deliver a dazzling display of colour, movement and music inspired by their Australian lifestyle.
The Schools Spectacular introduces young performers to live audiences in the tens of thousands and, via ABC TV, reaches the homes of millions of Australians nationwide.
In the education landscape ‘the Spec’ rises as a testament to the values of public education: integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, participation, care, fairness and democracy.
