Combined Drama Ensemble
The Combined Drama Ensemble showcases the exceptional dramatic talent of NSW public school students. The ensemble will made up of schools from right across NSW. As part of the drama ensemble, students will work to master the elements of drama including rhythm, timing/pace, space and filmic elements. Students will also develop skills in voice, movement dynamic and the ability to create and sustain a character/role/role.
Schools are able to nominate up to 12 students from Years 8-12 who have strong dramatic skill and experience. It is possible that not all 12 performers will be selected. Exact numbers will be notified on acceptance.
Schools are asked to present a self-devised group piece that will allow the audition panel to assess movement skills, expressive skills, characterisation skills and students ability to work as part of an ensemble.
Schools are required to create a 90 second video audition based on the theme ‘Leaving Home’.
Some of the concepts you may consider are: Who am I? Is it me or someone else leaving home? Why am I leaving home? What do I want, how do I feel and by what method do I show that in my film?
You can explore any appropriate style in your audition including:
A short film with location sequences
Use of dialogue
Music and movement
You are only limited by your imagination and the time to express your ideas!
The panel will be assessing your audition based on the following criteria:
Ability to create and sustain a character/role/roles
Ability to engage an audience
Voice and/or movement dynamic
Interpretation of the theme
Use of dramatic elements such as rhythm, timing/pace, space and/or use of filmic elements such as how you have manipulated the mise-en-scene to create a story

Tips from the audition panel
It is important that you are able to be clearly viewed and heard in the video.
You may choose to shoot your film indoors or outdoors but ensure that the light and any other elements such as wind or traffic do not interfere with the quality of your video.
Where possible, you should be dressed in form-fitting drama clothes – not school uniform or sports uniform, unless appropriate for your character.
You should act for camera and ensure that your expression can be clearly seen.
Film your video in landscape mode.
All students at the Schools Spectacular must be supervised by a teacher at all times.
Schools must provide a supervising teacher for the following categories: Combined Dance, Combined Choir, Specialist Ensembles, Aboriginal Dance Ensemble, Combined Drama Ensemble and D’Arts Ensemble students.
Each group will require their own supervising teacher even if they are from the same school.
Relief for supervising teachers is the responsibility of the school.
Teachers are encouraged to provide active supervision at all times and support the production team during rehearsals and show week.
How to upload a video to YouTube
