What is the Staff Production Team

NSW public school teachers who are interested in being involved in the Schools Spectacular as part of the team that brings the production to life should apply for a position on the staff production team.

There are many varied elements to the show that are covered within the staff production team and each of these is critical to the smooth running of the show and high quality outcome. They also provide great insight to the mechanics of a production on such an epic scale. Stage management, cast management, costume coordination, props coordination, catering and wellbeing are a few of the many roles available. Production team members are also considered for leadership roles within the team to assist with managing staff, roles and areas of the show.

The success of the Spectacular relies on the passion and involvement of NSW public school teachers. If you are interested in working as a member of the staff production team please indicate your interest by completing an online application form. On this form, please detail your relevant training and experience. We encourage experienced teachers as well as teachers who have not been involved in the team in previous years to apply.

Specialist Staff Production Team Roles

Teachers or industry professionals can also nominate to apply for specialist staff production team roles that require unique experience and skills. The successful applicants will work closely with the Schools Spectacular creative and operational teams and will be responsible for managing teams and schedules for rehearsals.

Choir Manager

Key responsibilities:

• Work closely with Schools Spectacular Choral Director
• Coordinate choir stage management team (selection/letters of agreement/scheduling)
• Create performance seating plan
• Oversee changes of choir personnel (contact details), choir allocation/numbers, part allocation, t-shirt orders
• Liaise with VET students regarding fire door access
• Attend all combined choir rehearsals
• Ensure venue staff are briefed/contact for first aid
• Oversee sign-on roll by teachers
• Choir seating at venues
• Run choir teachers’ meetings
• Performance venue tour/induction for teachers
• Oversee prop bag distribution and prop replacement
• Combined choir troubleshooting

Creative Director Assistant

Key responsibilities:

• Be a communication channel between the Creative Director, key stakeholders and the cast
• Assist the Creative Director with implementing changes and amendments to the show
• Collaborate with Schools Spectacular Creative Team and heads of the NSW Department of Education
• Attend Featured Artist rehearsals as required
• Assist with implementing creative solutions to any issues that arise
• Support a calm, solution-driven, productive environment

Featured Artist Manager

Key responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Schools Spectacular Operations Manager and Creative Team
• Communicate with Featured Artists throughout the rehearsal period and show week
• Support the wellbeing needs of Featured Artists
• Communicate with parents as required
• Manage scheduling and organisation of rehearsals
• Liaise with rehearsal venue staff
• Attend rehearsals for Featured Artist as required
• Manage Featured Artist dressing room in show week
• Lead Featured Artist stage management team

Featured Artist Vocal Tutor

Key responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Schools Spectacular Creative Team
• Attend auditions as required
• Run vocal workshops for groups and individual Featured Artists
• Run vocal warm ups
• Assist with scheduling to ensure best use of time and resources
• Attend Featured Artist rehearsals
• Support Featured Artists with vocal health throughout the rehearsal and show period
• Provide feedback on progress of rehearsals to key Schools Spectacular team members

Featured Dance Manager

Key responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Schools Spectacular Dance Director and Creative Team
• Communicate with Featured Dancers throughout rehearsal period and show week
• Manage scheduling and organisation for rehearsals
• Liaise with rehearsal venue staff
• Support for choreographers and teachers at rehearsals
• Collect and manage Featured Dancer costume measurements
• Liaise with costume suppliers and dressmakers
• Coordinate pre and post-show costume maintenance, storage and cleaning
• Attend rehearsals for combined dance as required
• Manage Featured Dancer dressing room during show week
• Lead Featured Dancer stage management team

Stage Band Supervisor

Key responsibilities:

• Attend all stage band rehearsals, arriving 45 minutes prior to every rehearsal
• Set up rehearsal space
• Manage student arrival/departure including managing attendances and absences where relevant
• Supervise students during rehearsals and breaks
• Assist stage band director
• Assist music ensembles manager
• Stage manage the ensemble during the rehearsals and performances
• Supervise clean up of rehearsal and dressing room spaces
• Troubleshoot solutions to any issues that arise (includes sheet music, instruments, logistics, sound/technical issues)

Stage Manager

Key responsibilities:

• Liaise with the Show Caller and Creative Director with regard to the call for the show and pass on relevant information as needed
• Maintain calm and confident communication with all team members, teachers and cast
• Attend additional rehearsals as required to support the plot book development and show details
• Communicate any changes in the show that arise to key personnel
• Lead the Stage Management Team and provide information, feedback and encouragement in daily debrief
• Prepare relevant documentation of show call requirements
• Communicate directly with tunnel managers, call to stage, props and staging teams in rehearsals and show week
• Accurately and efficiently interpret information from the Show Caller and the Creative Director to manage and coordinate cues for movement of performers, props and staging on the arena floor.
• Troubleshoot solutions for issues in tunnels if they arise during shows

Leaders of each team will be chosen based on previous experience. Please include as much detail of your previous experience in your application as possible.

Casual release

The Arts Unit will cover the cost of casual release for current school staff. This will be paid to your school for the schools days you are at the Schools Spectacular. The Arts Unit does not cover accommodation or travel. Teachers will need to arrange their own accommodation while they are participating in the Schools Spectacular and organise their own parking and transport to and from the performance venue.

Application Process

1. Read the information and confirm you are available for all dates listed.
2. Complete the online form by Tuesday 14 June 2022. Please include as much detail of your experience as possible
3. Submit your online application to the Schools Spectacular Team. Your Principal will be asked to endorse your application at a later date.
4. If successful, you will be sent an acceptance package. Once this is received, your place is confirmed.

Please note: All members of the staff production team must be available to attend all rehearsals and performances from Wednesday 23 November – Saturday 26 November 2022. Staff production team members will be notified of exact details if successful.
